PROGRESS TO DATE

TRANSPORTATION NETWORK BACKGROUND
The Castle Pines Metropolitan District and the Village at Castle Pines (the Village) has approximately 86 miles of two-lane paved roadways, and access into the community is controlled through five gates. Total vehicle entries into the community are more than 1.7 million vehicles per year, consisting of residents, visitors, and contractors. The Village also includes approximately 12 miles of both paved and unpaved trails for use by pedestrians and bicyclist. This trail system is primarily used for recreation. Sidewalks are generally absent from Village streets, which in some areas causes pedestrian and bicycle traffic to share the roadways with vehicles.

EXISTING CONDITIONS ANALYSIS
The first part of the traffic study included an existing conditions and safety analysis of the roadway network in the Village to complete the following:

  • Document existing conditions

  • Define the parameters of the Village road classifications

  • Assess the adequacy of existing traffic control

The existing conditions analysis documented the characteristics of the three types of roadway classifications within the Village (Class I, II, and III) and inventoried traffic volumes, pedestrian facilities, traffic control devices, and traffic calming techniques.

SAFETY ANALYSIS
Following the existing conditions analysis, a safety analysis was conducted to identify opportunities to improve safety within the Village. The safety analysis conducted sight distance evaluations and speed and crash analyses, alongside detailed field reviews by Olsson engineering consulting staff. The intent of the safety analysis was to identify vehicle crash and speed patterns and any other hotspots or potential safety concerns.

NEXT STEPS
Over the course of the next month, Olsson engineering consulting staff will develop program recommendations to address traffic safety concerns in the Village. Castle Pines Metropolitan District is seeking public input to help guide future transportation improvements within the community.
